Modeling a Tubular Braid / Braided Rope in 3DS Max

I've gotten a few emails over the past few years about my braid tutorials asking me if I knew how to make a braided rope or tubular braid. Well I've tried many times to figure it out how to make it work and I finally have the answer.

Modeling a Braid in 3DS Max - Method 2 - Including Multi-Strand Braids

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
A basic knowledge of using 3d Studio Max is assumed.


As any 3DS Max user knows, there's more than one way to model an object. So, once I figured out how to make a braid, I set out to learn how to make multi-strand braids. This led me to realize that my first method isn't exactly perfect, so I have devised this second method of making braids, which works quite well for making multi-strand braids.

Modeling a Braid in 3DS Max - Method 1

Creating a braid was a challenge posed to me by one of my fellow co-workers. He had looked for tutorials online and finding none, asked for my help. Here is my method for creating braids that are easy to make, easy to adjust, and remain editable splines for simplicity.
